Safety Manager

Job Description

The Safety Manager is responsible for the safety performance and development of their assigned business units and direct reports. This individual serves as a safety resource at the project, business unit, and corporate levels. They will regularly assess the safety needs of assigned projects or units and leverage resources to meet those needs. The Safety Manager also contributes to the development of the General Contractor’s corporate safety program and overall safety culture.

Responsibilities

  • Manage workloads of direct reports based on project volume and departmental responsibilities, making staffing recommendations as needed.
  • Conduct regular check-ins and yearly performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Assess training needs and support professional development of Safety Department members.
  • Train and mentor team members in safety practices and career growth.
  • Participate in the retention and recruitment of Safety Department staff.
  • Manage outside consultant project needs and performance.
  • Determine and fulfill the safety needs of multiple projects and/or business units.
  • Conduct independent on-site safety inspections and evaluate compliance.
  • Analyze hazard and incident data to identify trends and set focus areas.
  • Set inspection criteria, mentor operations teams, and review project compliance with safety regulations.
  • Address safety needs of future project work and subcontractor performance.
  • Lead OSHA or third-party inspections and oversee incident investigations.
  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate toolbox talks, orientations, and site-specific training.
  • Participate in preconstruction safety planning and subcontractor preconstruction meetings.
  • Review Job Hazard Analyses and enforce project safety policies.
  • Research OSHA regulations and trial new safety-related products and protective equipment.
  • Serve as the point of contact for safety processes, inspections, and client or public safety concerns.
  • Collaborate with the Risk Management team and participate in professional safety organizations.
  • Develop and track business unit and corporate-level safety goals.
  • Provide monthly safety summaries for assigned business units.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety or related field preferred.
  • CHST, CSP, or equivalent safety designation.
  • OSHA 30-Hour for Construction (OSHA 500 preferred).
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of construction safety experience with degree, or 8+ years without degree.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of high-hazard areas (cranes, fall protection, scaffolding, excavation, electrical).
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to changing schedules.
  • Willingness to respond to emergencies and work under varied site conditions.
  • Demonstrates leadership by modeling safe work practices.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $120k- $130K
