History of "ICSJSD"

The International Conference on Social Justice and Sustainable Development “ICSJSD is an independent academic initiative committed to promoting global dialogue on justice, equality, and the goals of sustainable development. Founded in 2022 at the University of Salamanca, the conference was originally conceived by Majedeh Bozorgi, a doctoral researcher in Law, under the academic guidance of Professor Dr. Lorenzo Mateo Bujosa Vadell. What began as an idea shared between mentor and student has grown into a dynamic annual platform that connects scholars, practitioners, and institutions from around the world.

Each edition of the “ICSJSD” explores new dimensions of social justice, aligning its reflections with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and fostering exchanges among universities, research centers, and organizations working to advance equity and human rights.

Over the years, the conference has received invaluable academic support and collaboration from various institutional bodies of the University of Salamanca — particularly the Gender Equality Unit, under the leadership of Professor Dr. María Inmaculada Sánchez Barrios, whose insight and engagement have strengthened the dialogue on inclusivity and social transformation. Nevertheless, “ICSJSD” remains an autonomous platform designed to unite diverse voices and perspectives beyond institutional or disciplinary boundaries.

The conference has successfully gathered distinguished participants from across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East — including judges, legal scholars, and human rights advocates — to discuss pressing global challenges through the lens of justice and sustainability. Through its interdisciplinary nature, “ICSJSD” continues to build bridges between academia and civil society, inspiring innovative approaches to the advancement of social justice worldwide.

The “ICSJSD” remains committed to maintaining an open and evolving academic space for collaboration, exchange, and knowledge-sharing — fostering a future in which justice and sustainable development are mutually reinforcing pillars of global progress.

Our Values and Global Reach

A Global Platform for Justice and Change

Since its inception, the International Conference on Social Justice and Sustainable Development (ICSJSD) has stood as a bridge between continents, disciplines, and ideas — a gathering where academic excellence meets real-world impact.  With more than 40 universities, research institutes, and organizations from over 22 countries and 5 continents actively participating, ICSJSD has grown into a truly international academic movement. Through both in-person and online participation, the conference has welcomed over 200 researchers, students, and practitioners each year, fostering dialogue that transcends borders and disciplines.

Themes that Matter — Conversations that Inspire

Each edition of the conference is shaped around a central theme reflecting urgent global challenges. From human rights and gender equality to climate justice and access to education, ICSJSD provides a multidisciplinary platform for experts and advocates to critically analyze and propose sustainable solutions. In alignment with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the conference dedicates a special segment each year to mark an International Day of global significance, inviting researchers and human rights activists to engage in dialogue, share field experiences, and co-create innovative responses to contemporary crises.

Nobel Voices for Justice

ICSJSD is proud to have hosted two distinguished Nobel Peace Prize Laureates whose lifelong dedication to justice and human rights has inspired generations.  Dr. Shirin Ebadi, Iran’s first female judge and Nobel Peace Prize laureate(2003), shared her invaluable insights on women’s rights and global justice. Mrs. Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, conveyed her message of resilience and hope to the international audience of the conference. Their contributions embody the spirit of ICSJSD — a commitment to amplify voices of courage, integrity, and equality on a global stage.

FOUNDED IN 1218

Alfonso IX of León wanted to have higher education in his kingdom and for this reason he created the ‘scholas Salamanticae’ in 1218, the seed of the current University of Salamanca that has more than 800 years of uninterrupted history creating, promoting and disseminating knowledge.
